Predators are always looking for an easy meal, but with a few simple DIY upgrades, you can protect your flock without sacrificing mobility. In our latest video, we show exactly how we predator-proof our hoop coop while keeping it easy to move.

DIY Anti-Dig Apron That Moves with Your Coop

Digging predators like coyotes, foxes, raccoons, and dogs can be a major threat, but burying fencing isn’t the only solution. We use hog panels as an anti-dig apron, attaching them to the sides of the coop so they hinge upward when moving it. This creates a flexible but effective barrier that keeps predators from digging under while allowing for easy relocation.

Stronger Latches for Smarter Predators

Raccoons and other crafty critters can figure out simple latches, so we reinforce our coop with carabiner clips on the gate latches and double barrel bolts on the nesting box door. These extra security measures help keep out raccoons, opossums, bobcats, and other determined predators.

The Only Predator That Made It Inside

Our coop has successfully kept out coyotes, foxes, hawks, owls, raccoons, dogs, opossums, and bobcats—and since we don’t have bears in our area, that’s one less thing to worry about. The only intruder? A black rat snake that found an open chicken door and helped itself to some eggs. Lesson learned—always close the door at night!
